Along with the release of the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, Apple also showed at the autumn presentation a new line of smart watches Apple Watch Series 4. They received an updated design, a new platform, a larger display, and a number of other interesting innovations. Let's see what the new Apple watch can do and how it works in practice.
As before, the company offers Apple Watch Series 4 in two sizes, but now they have become a little larger: 40 and 44 mm. The choice of the case is reduced to aluminum or steel. Also, users are offered to choose between a version with support for GPS and LTE, or just GPS and Wi-Fi. The actual size of the case, its material (aluminum or steel) and the presence of the LTE module are the main differences between different Apple Watch Series 4.
Then marketing comes into play, and in addition to regular watches, Apple offers customers a Nike version, as well as an Apple Watch from Hermès, the most expensive of all available models. However, as mentioned above, technically it is Apple Watch Series 4 still the same version of the watch with the same capabilities. The differences lie only in the complete straps and in the additional dials.
The Apple Watch package has not changed since the first version, the user gets two strap sizes with it, as well as induction charging, which is connected via a USB port.
But the very presentation of the watches has changed a little, now they are supplied in a rag case, and the straps are in a separate box. Apparently, Apple wants to emphasize that this is an accessory that can be changed.
During the presentation, Apple repeatedly emphasized that the Apple Watch Series 4 is a completely new watch with a new design. Of course, I will not question the internal changes in the device.
But in terms of design, the innovations did not greatly affect the appearance of the Apple Watch. In this regard, the watch is not far from the previous version. The designers used the same body shape and design with a glass bezel that is rounded at the edges and goes into a metal frame. Therefore, the main differences between Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 3 lie in the details.
The watch has become slightly larger, the smaller version now has a case height of 40 mm, and the larger version is 44 mm (versus 38 and 42 mm in Series 3). In addition, their thickness has decreased from 11.4 mm to 10.7 mm. At first glance, this is not such a striking change, but in practice the watch looks neater on the wrist and clings less to the sleeves of clothes.
Apple also completely redesigned the bottom of the watch, now it is made of ceramic and includes a new optical heart rate monitor and electrocardiography diodes, which I will discuss later.
Well, to conclude the description of the changes in the Apple Watch Series 4 case, one cannot fail to note the new Digital Crown navigation wheel. It gained support for tactile feedback during scrolling, which is provided by the Haptic Engine vibration motor, became slightly thinner and now fits more tightly to the body.
Apparently Apple drew attention to the problem of dust and dirt getting into the Digital Crown mechanism, because of which the wheel could jam and needed to be washed. By the way, the Apple Watch Series 4 case is water resistant up to 50 meters according to the ISO 22810: 2010 standard. The watch can swim in a pool or open water, but Apple does not recommend diving, water skiing, or other sports in which the device is lowered or exposed to a stream of water at high speed.
Since the design of the Apple Watch Series 4 has not radically changed, the company decided not to touch the strap mechanism, which has not changed since the release of the first version of the watch. Thus, straps from previous generations of Apple Watch fit without problems with new ones.
